What is message mapping in a grassroots advocacy platform?

Message mapping is a powerful, specialized feature within Muster that allows account admins to "map" different messages to selected elected officials in a campaign. This enables your advocates to send two messages to two sets of targets within one action.

Why should you use message mapping in your advocacy campaigns?

Message mapping allows for a more targeted approach to grassroots advocacy. It allows you to communicate two different sets of ideas or talking points to two groups of legislators.

How can you utilize message mapping?

Message mapping is an invaluable tool for advocacy campaigns at every level of government, from federal to local. By tailoring messages to specific groups of elected officials, organizations can ensure that their communications are relevant and impactful. This strategic approach enhances the effectiveness of advocacy efforts, fostering more meaningful dialogue between constituents and their representatives.

Below are a few examples of how message mapping can be implemented.

Local

  • Targets 1: City Council
    • Advocates send a message to their city council member or all members if it's an at-large situation.
  • Target 2: Mayor
    • Advocates send a message directed to the mayor asking them to support or oppose what the city council is deciding on.

We've talked before about how local-level advocacy can often have the most immediate and influential impact on people's lives. In this example, we've created a campaign targeting the city council and the mayor of a locality.

State: Committee & State Senate

  • Targets 1: State Senate Committee
    • Message 1: Advocates can send a message to either the entire committee or the elected official they are a constituent of asking them to pass a bill through the committee.
  • Target 2: State Senate
    • Message 2: Advocates can send a message bringing awareness to the bill in committee and asking them to support it when it reaches them in the Senate.

State: Legislative Body & Governor

  • Targets 1: Upper + Lower Legislative Chambers
    • Message 1: Advocates send a message to all of their state-level reps.
  • Target 2: Governor
    • Message 2: Advocates send a targeted message to the Governor

This is an incredibly useful tactic when the budget is being set, and your organization wants to lobby for funding around specific issues. You can tailor one message to the legislative body and one to the Governor, allowing advocates to ping the legislative and executive branches in one campaign.

Federal: Thank & Spank

  • Targets 1: 52 U.S. Senators Voted Yea
    • Advocates who are constituents of those Senators who voted "Yea" can send a message admonishing them.
  • Targets 2: 48 U.S. Senators Voted Nay
    • Advocates who are constituents of those who voted "Nay" can send a message thanking them.

Celebrate the elected officials who voted your way and wag your finger at those who didn't.

This approach allows constituents to send a thank-you message to their senator who voted "nay" and a spank message to those who voted to support the bill. This allows you and your advocates to highly targeted and specific messaging to legislators based on how they voted.

Federal: Similar legislation in the House & Senate

  • Targets 1: 100 Senators
    • Message 1: Advocates send a message to their Senators referencing specific legislation in the Senate
  • Targets 2: 435 House Members
    • Message 2: Advocates send a message to their House rep referencing similar legislation in the House.

In this campaign, we're targeting all of Congress, but we're having constituents send different messages to House reps and Senators referencing similar bills that are in each chamber.
